Lenders Could Help With Late Payments
Topic Added September 8th, 2006 - Print This Story
\r\nThe number of foreclosures across the country is steadily increasing as the mortgage boom of 2003-2005 starts to catch up. Many homebuyers opted for an adjustable rate mortgage during this time, qualifying them for more house than they could really afford. Some have felt the effects of a slowing economy, forcing them from their job. Whatever the case, many homeowners are realizing that they cannot afford their mortgage, and are beginning to fall behind.\r\n
Many of these people feel that contacting their lender is the biggest mistake they could make; this is the furthest thing from the truth. If the lag happens for only a month, many lenders will not report the late payment if they receive notice prior to the payment being due. Other lenders may offer repayment schedules outside their mortgage that fit into their budget. Though it sounds like philanthropy, it is actually good business. A foreclosure leaves a bank with a house they do not want, and will often cost them $50,000 to discharge. If ever a homebuyer falls behind on their mortgage, the first call made should be to their lender.\r\n
